In his own words
2008 will be your first year with Health Net-Maxxis. Give us a bit of background on where you've been, and how you got here.
On the mountain bike side, K2/DD inc. Road: Colavita/Sutter Home, Kodak Gallery/Sierra Nevada plus on and off with Mavic for the past 10 years or so.
What particular aspects of your job do you pride yourself on the most? Perfect bar tape wrap? Not a spec of grease visible on the bike, at least where it's not supposed to be? Or maybe the bike just working perfectly?
I'm pretty happy when things work well and we don't have to get out of the car except to pee. All the little details and hard work add up to that.
How/why did you end up wrenching in the pro ranks in the first place?
In college, I was fortunate to work at Mavic, where I was exposed to the behind- the-scenes of it all. I was still racing at the time and to see all the background work that goes on in a bike race interested me. One thing lead to another and here I am.
Is your background working in bike shops?
Partly, I've also worked in the bike industry as well as the automotive industry. I got started doing my own mechanical work in college because I was too poor to go to a shop to get it done; the typical poor college student/bike racer. Who would have known it would have brought me to this?
Are you a cyclist yourself?
Yep, both road and mountain, just wish I had more time to do it all and work...
What are your interests outside of cycling?
Motorcyles, cars, enjoying time at home, catching up with friends, music, Tivo.
If I wasn't wrenching I'd be...
Perhaps doing something else entirely. I know I'd be riding my bike more for sure.
