In his own words
Is this your first year as Health Net's team Chiropractor?
No, I started with the team in 2003, its first year.
What other cycling teams have you worked with in the past?
UC Berkeley Cycling Team, 1999
How/why did you end up working with a cycling team?
I have been treating athletes since my last year in chiropractic school. When I moved to the Bay area I offered my services and sponsored UC Berkeley's team in 1999. Then in December 2002, Thierry Attias approached me about being part of the new Health Net team, and the rest is history.
Are you a cyclist yourself?
Yes, I raced for UC Irvine and several club teams in So Cal from 1988 to 1998. I continue to ride for fitness and occasional competition.
What do you like about working with cyclists?
Cyclists are very attuned to their bodies, they are healthy and motivated to stay fit.
How does your practice relate to cycling? Do you specialize in treating injuries common to cyclists?
I have a practice in Alameda, California that specializes in sports injuries and rehab. I see all types of athletes, from elite level to weekend warriors. As a former bike racer, I am familiar with the injuries cyclists acquire.
Are there any common injuries that you see among cyclists (besides broken collarbones)?
Typically, iliotibial (IT) band syndrome is common, muscle strains, joint sprains, spinal misalignments and road rash. Pretty much any injury that does not require an emergency room visit.
What are your interests outside of cycling?
Surfing is a passion, but I don't like surfing in Nor Cal; too cold. I was spoiled in So Cal and Hawaii. I have been participating in adventure races for past three years. Playing with my kids.
