Frank Pipp

Frank continued to improve in 2007, achieving a break-out win at the Presbyterian Healthcare Invitational last August. His ability to read a race, finish strong after a long day in the saddle, and his strength as a team player make him a critical component in stage and one-day races.

In his own words

After achieving some stellar results in 2007, including the big win in Charlotte, are you finally out from behind the expansive shadow of the Big Unit, Karl Menzies?

You can never escape his shadow; he is a really really large land-mammal.

And speaking of whom, you've gone from rooming with Karl to rooming with Rory Sutherland. Is that part of it, or do you just have a thing for Aussies?

Perhaps they have a thing for me? Hmmm.

How did you spend this off-season?

Took a few vacations instead of sitting on the couch like last year. One of them was bird hunting with my two older brothers and my dad, which was fantastic.

What are your goals or expectations for the 2008 season?

Take out of few wins for the team and do my share of the work for the other guys.

When did you start racing, and why?

My brother Darren got me into it - I could live with he and his family rent-free if I raced with him. That was in 2000.

Who were/are your cycling mentors and/or influences?

My brother.

What was your first bike? When/how did you get it?

Besides the Huffy bikes that everyone has as kids, I received a custom-painted (rainbow of course) Waterford as a college graduation present from my brother.

What was your first win?

The first race I did in 2000. The Wisconsin-famous GDVC #1.

What would you consider your finest moment on the bike?

Winning the last stage of the Nature Valley GP, on my Dad's birthday, was a great one. Being there and seeing Menzies crush it day after day at 'Toona this year was one that I won't ever forget either.

What was your worst or most embarrassing moment on the bike?

I will keep last year's answer and say getting beat by Garrett Peltonen in a sprint, although now that I think about it I'm not sure if it's ever happened... but if it did that would be really embarrassing.

What's the strangest thing you've seen on a bike ride?

G. Peltonen beating anyone in a sign sprint.

What's the strangest thing you've done on a bike ride?

I am much too calculating to do anything out of the ordinary on the bike.

What's the one thing you've done on a ride (training or race) that you will absolutely never do again?

Continue riding uphill when it starts snowing because "it's not much further to the top."

When you're not on your bike, what do you like to do?

Read. Watch TV. Run. Spend time with my girlfriend.

If you weren't a professional cyclist, what would you be doing?

I would be a professional bowler. Or at least an above-average amateur.
