In his own words

How did you spend your off-season?

I spent my off-season erasing bad tan lines and learning to surf in Kauai, Hawaii.

While riding for Einstein's in 2007, did you eat a lot of bagels during the season? What was your favorite?

I'd have to say chocolate chip bagel with strawberry cream cheese would have to be my favorite, although it's a little messy in the jersey pocket.

What are your goals or expectations for the 2008 season?

As a first year pro I plan to learn as much as possible from the best riders in the country, while working very hard to help the team achieve great success!

When did you start racing, and why?

I started racing when a few college buddies of mine, "Rad Ross" Schnell and Nick Martin, tricked me into racing collegiate Nationals on a borrowed mountain bike.

Who were/are your cycling mentors and/or influences?

Although I didn't really take his advice until college, I would have to say my father was a big influence in my decision to ride my bike. He followed the Coors Classic and the Tour during the LeMond days. I would also have to say that the local Durango community and local cyclist have been a huge influence; it's really nice to know people are interested in following your progress.

What was your first bike? When/how did you get it?

My first bike was a Diamond Back BMX. It was a present from my parents in 1986.

What was your first win?

The first race I entered, Ruby Canyon Mountain Bike Classic in Fruita, CO, when I was 12 years old. I took a hiatus after this win and continued racing a few years later in college.

What would you consider your finest moment on the bike?

Riding and laughing with a few buddies all the way through Mexico and Belize on a bicycle tour I did a few years ago for training.

What would you consider your worst or most embarrassing moment on the bike?

Having my chamois pulled over my saddle while on a group ride (you can imagine what happened when I panicked and stood up).

What's the strangest thing you've seen on a bike ride?

Experiencing the chamois pull over from behind (hopefully Health Net hooks me up with bibs this year).

What's the one thing you've done on a ride (training or race) that you will absolutely never do again?

I had to duct tape my sandals to my clipless pedals for a mountain bike ride because I forgot my shoes. Not too smart...

When you're not on your bike, what do you like to do?

Ski, fly fish, explore the mountains around Durango, cook with my girlfriend, and hangout with my dog, Berkeley.

If I wasn't a pro cyclist I'd be...

...back in school finishing up the architecture thing, or living in a snowy town washing dishes and skiing everyday.
