Augusta, GA - Frank Pipp of the Health Net Pro Cycling Team Presented by Maxxis made the most of a strong lead-out by teammate Rory Sutherland to take the top spot on the first and only King of the Mountain sprint during Stage 2 of the Tour de Georgia Presented by AT&T, thus earning the race's first KOM jersey.
The KOM came on the first of two finishing circuits in the finish city of Augusta, site of the recent Masters Championship golf tournament, with about 7.5 miles remaining in the 117-mile stage. Despite the high pace being set by High Road and Slipstream, which were looking to control the front of the race for their sprinters, Sutherland was able to power off the front with Pipp in tow and deliver him to the top of the climb for the points. Sutherland took third.
Pipp has been aggressive in both stages of the race, making the main break of the day in Stage 1. His hard riding was rewarded today with the KOM jersey. Pipp finished 44th on the stage on the same time as stage winner J.J. Haedo (CSC).
