Cannon Falls, MN - Kirk O'Bee missed out on a strong chance for the win in Stage 1 of the Nature Valley Grand Prix Wednesday when the stage was neutralized due to bad weather. At the time, the national criterium champion had established a solid lead on the pack solo and looked in good position to stay away until the stage was halted.
In Stage 2, the 60-mile Cannon Falls Road Race, he got his redemption, capping off a perfect team effort with a sprint win in downtown Cannon Falls.
"We set out a plan and executed it to a T," Health Net Presented by Maxxis directeur sportif Mike Tamayo said. "The entire team rode like rock stars today."
The race mostly stayed together throughout, and after the first of five two-mile circuits in Cannon Falls, Health Net Presented by Maxxis went to the front and stayed there.
"When we got to four laps to go, we took control of the race," Tamayo said. "Phil Zajicek showed his strength today by doing a pull at the front that had to be two laps. Rory (Sutherland) did the lead-out and dropped off Kirk for the sprint."
O'Bee started his sprint a bit early, but was still able to hold on for the win, a repeat of his win in this stage at last year's NVGP. John Murphy added a bit of icing by taking third on the stage.
"We definitely showed our strength today," Tamayo said. "The win was also a bit of redemption for last night."
