Menzies takes 3rd at CSC Invitational

Arlington, VA - Karl Menzies of the Health Net Pro Cycling Team Presented by Maxxis finished third at the CSC Invitational out of a 13-rider break that lapped the field.

The break went almost immediately from the start of the 100-lap, 100 km race. And once the break hit full strength within the first 10 laps of the race, the small group began to establish a solid lead. And with almost every major team in the race represented, there were only one or two teams with any motivation to chase. And when that motivation shut off, the lead, which had held at 20 seconds for a number of laps, went out quickly.

"Once we got out there and all of us started to rotate through," Menzies said, "it was pretty apparent that we were going to lap the field after a while."

Which they did with more than 30 laps still to race. Coming into the final few laps, Health Net Presented by Maxxis was well set-up on the front, with Rory Sutherland doing massive turns at the front to keep the pace high.

But in the home stretch, Menzies said, "I started my sprint just a bit too late. I've been going a bit too early of late, so I held back, but I didn't have quite enough time to come around at the end."

Despite not getting the win, the big man from Tasmania was pleased with the start of what is arguably one of the hardest weeks of racing in the U.S. "The team is obviously going really well right now," he said. "Hopefully we can improve on this result with a win this week."

Notes

Back on the west coast, Roman Kilun of Health Net Presented by Maxxis built on the good form he achieved coming out of the Mt. Hood Cycling Classic to win the Dunlap Time Trial in Davis, CA. Kilun was instrumental in helping teammate Rory Sutherland to the overall win at Mt. Hood, and he also road to an impressive 19th place in the Stage 4 time trial at Hood.
