Oakland, CA - What could be healthier than riding a bike? Not much. That's one of the messages that Roman Kilun and Kyle Gritters of the Health Net Pro Cycling Team Presented by Maxxis will deliver to kids age 5-11 participating in a Healthy Kids day camp program in Rancho Cordova, California on August 14.
Many of the kids participating in the week-long day camp in this suburb of Sacramento fall into the at-risk category. "Most of them have the potential to become overweight," notes team president Thierry Attias. "With this camp, we want to give them the tools they need to develop good nutrition habits and encourage them to get the recommended 60-minutes of daily activity. Ideally, we want to teach them how to be healthy in their every-day lives, help them make good choices about food, and give them information on healthy lifestyles they might otherwise not have access to. And make it fun in the process.
"Our title sponsor, Health Net, is committed to helping kids like them lead healthier lives," Attias adds. "It's part of the company's mission to promote healthy lifestyles, and sponsoring the team for five years now has given them a public vehicle for extending that mission to the many communities that Health Net serves, and where the team races and participates in events like the camp."
In addition to talking about the healthy benefits of cycling, such as improving cardiovascular strength and controlling weight, Kilun and Gritters also will talk about what foods constitute good nutrition - and what foods to avoid, like fast food and other high-fat and calorie snacks such as chips, candy and sodas.
They will also give a bike safety clinic on safe cycling, such as wearing helmets every time they ride, and how to make sure their bikes are working properly.
