No spills but plenty of thrills in Stage 2 finish at Amgen Tour

Sacramento, CA - The Health Net Pro Cycling Team Presented by Maxxis shook off the affects of Monday's late crash in Stage 1 and looked to bring Shawn Milne into position for the sprint on L Street in the shadow of the state capitol building in downtown Sacramento.

During the second of three 3 km long finishing circuits in downtown, Tim Johnson of Health Net Presented by Maxxis brought Milne, Russell Downing and Karl Menzies into the mix at the front of the bunch.

But with the speed high and the organization low at the front end of the race, the lead-out train dissolved on the first attempt, as did the trains of Navigators and T-Mobile. With 1 km to go, Downing and Menzies had gotten things back together for Milne near the front of the pack, with Menzies taking Milne to 500 meters to go.

"They did a good job setting things up," Milne said. "I just didn't have the top end to go with guys like J.J. (Haedo) and Thor (Hushovd)."

Instead, Haedo (CSC) took the stage by a comfortable two bike lengths over Luca Paolini (Liquigas) and Hushovd (Credit Agricole).

The Amgen Tour of California continues Wednesday with a 95-mile stage from Stockton to San Jose, which includes the potentially decisive climb up Sierra Road 20 miles from the finish.

Notes

Downing (14th), Milne (17th) and Kirk O'Bee (20th) all finished in the top 20 on the stage for Health Net Presented by Maxxis. The team held its 4th place position in the overall team classification.
