Wreck shakes up finish of Stage 1 but overall classification remains unchanged

Santa Rosa, CA - A huge crash coming through the finish area at the end of the first of three circuits in downtown Santa Rosa wreaked havoc on the peloton, taking down nearly half the field, including race leader Levi Leipheimer, as well as five members of the Health Net Pro Cycling Team Presented by Maxxis. None of the team's riders were seriously injured.

Despite the splits that occurred because of the crash, race officials ruled that all riders who entered the finishing circuits in the front group would receive the same finishing time.

"Everyone was riding really well up to that point," said team directeur sportif Jeff Corbett. "We were looking at setting up Shawn (Milne) in the sprint before the wreck. Shawn made it through unscathed, but then someone put a derailleur through his front wheel with 2 km to go. He didn't go down, but he was out of contention after that."

Kyle Gritters and Tim Johnson also made it through without getting caught up in the carnage, with Gritters finishing 16th on the stage.

The Amgen Tour of California continues Tuesday with a 116-mile stage from Santa Rosa to Sacramento.
