Health Net Presented by Maxxis riders to chase two USPRO championships this weekend
Greenville, S.C. - There will be no rest this Labor Day weekend for the 10 American riders on the Health Net Pro Cycling Team Presented by Maxxis. Instead, they will compete for the U.S. national time trial and road championships in Greenville, South Carolina, practically in the backyard of team directeur sportif Jeff Corbett. "Both the time trial and road courses are definitely challenging," Corbett said.
The weekend of racing kicks off Friday with the individual time trial. Jeff Louder, Scott Moninger, Roman Kilun, Tim Johnson and Doug Ollerenshaw will challenge the hilly, 20.15-mile course through the rolling hills around Greenville.
Louder and Moninger will be among the favorites, who also include 2004 national time trial champion David Zabriskie (CSC), 2005 national champion Chris Baldwin (Toyota-United) and local favorite George Hincapie (Discovery).
Sunday will be the first ever American-only USPRO road championship. Up until this year, the national champion had been decided in Philadelphia as part of, most recently, the Wachovia Week series of races, now known as the Commerce Bank Triple Crown.
More than 100 of the top American cyclists will roll out at 12:30 p.m. ET for the 121-mile race, which will include five trips over 2,000-foot Paris Mountain, and finish with three 3.76-mile circuits in Greenville.
"It's definitely a course that favors a rider like me," noted Ollerenshaw, who will be motivated to make a good showing after losing much of the early part of the year to a fractured femur. The course also favors Louder and Moninger, as well as Kirk O'Bee, who's shown he can get over some pretty serious climbs and still have the legs to win a sprint finish at the end.
Other favorites will include Hincapie, who knows these roads well, as well as 2005 champion Chris Wherry (Toyota-United), who won the championship while riding for Health Net Presented by Maxxis. Levi Leipheimer (Gerolsteiner) will go it solo, while TIAA-CREF will try to win on sheer numbers, entering 15 of its riders in the race.
