O'Neill, Henderson take Saturday stages at Mt. Hood
Hood River, OR - The Health Net Pro Cycling Team Presented by Maxxis showed its strength Saturday at the Mt. Hood Cycling Classic, winning both the morning and afternoon stages.
Race leader Nathan O'Neill, one of the best time trialists in the world, surprised no one when he won the morning Stage 4 TT, adding 0:33 to his lead over Phil Zajicek (Navigators), who finished third, and getting a measure of revenge after getting pipped on the line by his rival at the end of Stage 3.
Scott Moninger of Health Net Presented by Maxxis also took advantage of the TT to jump up to third overall from seventh.
In Saturday afternoon's Stage 5 criterium, Greg Henderson showed that he is well on his way back from the fractured hip he suffered in early March by winning the sprint against three break-away companions.
Henderson, Bernard Van Ulden (Navigators), James Mattis (Cal. Giant) and Andrew Pinfold (Symmetrics) slipped off the front of the peloton just five laps into the 60-minute race, built a lead that approached 0:40 on the bunch and stayed away for the duration. Henderson easily won the uphill sprint, opening up a one-second gap on Van Ulden at the line. Mattis and Pinfold came through four seconds behind Henderson. The win helped ease Henderson's frustration at being relegated after apparently winning the sprint finish in Stage 2.
In the race for fifth place, Moninger snuck off the front to finish one second ahead of the peloton.
Henderson was confident that they would be able to defend O'Neill's 0:47 lead over Zajicek. But with Moninger sitting just another 0:23 behind Zajicek on GC, Health Net Presented by Maxxis will have two strong cards to play in Sunday's Three Summits Road Race, which features 7,500 feet of climbing over 75 miles.
