Health Net-Maxxis doubles up at Joe Martin: Fraser wins Stage 2, Moninger Stage 3
Fayetteville, ARK - Gord Fraser of the Health Net Pro Cycling Team Presented by Maxxis followed his opening stage win at the Joe Martin Stage Race by winning Saturday morning's Stage 2 in a sprint.
Fraser won the 92-mile stage in much the same manner as Stage 1. Once again, his teammate Nathan O'Neill was in the main move of the day. Toward the end, the break fractured. Health Net Presented by Maxxis did the bulk of the work to chase, some help from Toyota-United. Fraser then took advantage of the Jelly Belly train to pip Alex Candelario for the win.
Moninger wins uphill TT; Fraser holds overall lead
With a 2.5-mile uphill TT Saturday afternoon, many people were tabbing Nathan O'Neill of Health Net Presented by Maxxis for the win, and possibly to take over the overall lead as well. Instead, it was last year's overall Joe Martin winner, Scott Moninger, winning the TT by two seconds ahead of his Australian teammate.
Though uphill TTs aren't usually Fraser's cup of tea, he showed his form as well, finishing 9th on the stage, 0:19 behind Moninger. With time bonuses from the two stage wins, Fraser continues to hold the overall lead by 0:11 with a hilly criterium to go on Sunday. Moninger's ride moved him up to second overall, while O'Neill took over the fourth position on GC.
Wedged between Moninger and O'Neill is Ivan Stevic (Toyota-United), also 0:11 behind. O'Neill noted before the TT that Stevic was a danger man for that stage as well. He put in a good showing, finishing 5th at 0:10 back.
