Nagambie, AUS - The attacks started from the gun in the third stage of the Jayco Herald SunTour, and when the right formula finally came together, a break of six riders went up the road, chased by a second group of six for much of the stage.
But with no riders of consequence to the overall lead in either of the two small groups, race leader Karl Menzies and his Health Net Pro Cycling Team Presented by Maxxis teammates were more than content to let them get up the road, riding tempo on the front and keeping the gap to a manageable time of under five minutes by the end. The stage was won by Trent Wilson, the Jittery Joe's rider who is part of the composite Jayco Australian team that includes Robbie McEwen and race favorite Simon Gerrans.
"I felt pretty good actually," Menzies told Cycling News. "I didn't have to do anything, the guys did a great job, the whole team got on the front and they just kept everything in check and made sure that it didn't blow out. It was perfect and there's not much else you can do. Once you're in yellow that's the race you've got to ride. I didn't have to touch the wind all day so it was actually a bit of a recovery day. Save it all up for Lake Mountain on Thursday."
The race continues Wednesday with another relatively flat 178 km stage before Thursday usually decisive 183 km ride up to the category 1 Lake Mountain.
