Portland, OR - When your title sponsor puts on the race, it's a good idea to win. Friday, the Health Net Pro Cycling Team Presented by Maxxis made sure they took care of business at the Health Net Criterium in Portland. Garrett Peltonen and Kyle Gritters attacked off the front and kept going until they had lapped the field.
"When we got out there, I looked at Garrett and asked if he wanted to lap the field," Gritters said. "He said, 'I've never done that before,' so I said, let's go."
When they had made contact and the laps counted down, Karl Menzies and Greg Henderson lit out of the pack, with Todd Herriot (Colavita-Sutter Home) chasing. But the two stayed away to close out the Health Net Presented by Maxxis sweep of the top four spots, with Peltonen taking the win.
"I told Garrett when you lap the field, you gotta win," Gritters said. And since it was the first time for Peltonen achieving the feat, it was only fitting he got the victory.
The fifth member of the Health Net Presented by Maxxis squad, Roman Kilun, finished 12th despite working for his teammates most of the race.
