Fresno, CA - After a near miss in the second stage of the Central Valley Classic on Saturday, Gord Fraser of the Health Net Pro Cycling Team Presented by Maxxis broke through with his first win of the season in Sunday's Stage 3 Tower District Criterium. The win also earned Fraser enough points to win the overall title of the three-day, omnium (accumulated points) format race.
"It definitely feels good to get that first win," Fraser said.
It was a hard-earned - and close - win as well. "You don't see a four-way photo finish very often," Fraser said.
He was sitting fourth wheel coming out of the final turn, which left him only 100 to 150 meters to the finish line to get around his rivals. "I knew I had good legs and I made a good run at it," Fraser said.
He made his move up the left side. "I knew I had Ivan (Dominguez, Toyota-United), but I couldn't see what was happening on his right," Fraser explained. "But I definitely thought I had it. I guess I had just enough distance and I threw my bike at the right time."
Fraser put himself in position for the overall omnium win by finishing second on Saturday in the Stage 2 Kearney Park Circuit Race. His teammate, Alberto Tiberio, finished third Saturday.
The omnium opened on Friday with a flat, 16.5 mile individual time trial, won by Heath Blackgrove (Toyota-United). Karl Menzies of Health Net Presented by Maxxis finished fourth. The ITT was originally slated to be a 6.5 mile climbing course, however poor weather conditions forced the route change.
