Menzies second at CSC Invitational, tune up for Triple Crown

Arlington, VA - Karl Menzies of the Health Net Pro Cycling Team Presented by Maxxis finished second in Saturday's CSC Invitational behind Mark McCormick (Colavita-Sutter Home). The 100 km race came down to a small field sprint, mainly because there was only a small field left at the end of what might be the toughest criterium in North America.

Only 26 riders were still on the course at the end, with just 16 in the bunch to contest the sprint. Menzies had help from Mike Sayers, while McCormick was actually trying to set up his teammate Kyle Wamsley, who had been gapped off in the closing laps. Instead, McCormick just kept his lead out going and was able to hold on.

After the race, Health Net Presented by Maxxis directeur sportif Jeff Corbett admitted that the team was laying low during the race because much of the squad was just getting their legs back in the aftermath of their trip to Europe.

This left Toyota-United to do most of the work chasing down the race's main break, which lead to a lot of burned matches - include sprinters J.J. Haedo and Ivan Dominguez - frustration and a fourth place by team captain Tony Cruz.

While the CSC Invitational is a tough race, it is merely a prelude to the Commerce Bank Triple Crown (formerly Wachovia Week), which begins Sunday with the difficult Lancaster Invitational.
